03 - Barry Jenkins, Moonlight

In Moonlight, the director Barry Jenkins uses color to create a sense of place: pastel building facades, deep blues of the ocean and sky, lush green grass and palms, rich caramels of a diner cast in the evening light. How are these color schemes being used to show the specificity of the neighborhood of Liberty City, Miami?

Beyond setting, how are different characters cast in different hues?

Yellow and Blue (a simultaneous contrast pair) are used constantly throughout the film. Why and to what purpose? What do these and other colors signal: Conflict or safety? Isolation or intimacy? How is emotion conveyed through the various color schemes?

How is color used to convey the coming of age story of Chiron - how is blue used as an idea? What does the color of Moonlight posit about a culture, a place, and the people of its community?
